You are an analyst for the International Medical Organization (IMO). At IMO, you work as part of a team of analysts who examine the spread of disease and their impacts on populations across the globe. Your supervisor has tasked your team with assessing the impact of specific diseases on global populations and gathering information on the efforts taken to prevent their spread. Specifically, each member of your team will be responsible for reporting on two types of diseases. As part of your contribution to the project, you will choose one type of communicable disease and one type of noncommunicable disease to assess from the list below:
Communicable Diseases | Noncommunicable Diseases |
Tuberculosis | Cancer |
Hepatitis C | Type 2 Diabetes |
HIV/AIDS | Obesity |
This assessment is a preliminary step in the development of the Impacts of Diseases and Prevention pages for your organization’s website. Public health professionals will use these webpages for training to improve the public’s awareness of the impacts of various diseases and the efforts taken by organizations like IMO to reduce the prevalence and spread of disease among global populations.
Directions
Communicable Disease Report: Each team member must identify one communicable disease from the list your supervisor provided, reporting on the spread, impacts, and prevention efforts for that disease. Your team has determined that the following items must be included in each team member’s report. Use the questions under each item to guide your assessment of the disease.
· Disease Spread: Determine the contributing factors that lead to the spread of the communicable disease you selected.
· How is the communicable disease transmitted? Consider how population density, lack of immunizations, sanitation, access to antibiotics, and sociodemographic variables, such as education, income, housing, environmental hazards, or access to care, lead to the spread of the disease.
· How has globalization increased the spread of the disease? How might the disease be spread among global populations? Consider international travel, trading, migration, and opening borders between countries.
· Impacts: Assess the impacts of the communicable disease you selected on public health, economics, and global health security.
· How does the disease impact the public health of global populations? Consider life expectancy, mortality rate, quality of life, and increased medical costs across the globe.
· How does the disease impact economic growth, productivity, and the workforce across the globe? Consider how the economic impact affects developing countries differently than developed countries.
· How has globalization impacted a country’s health security related to the spread of disease?
· Prevention: Discuss the global efforts taken to prevent the spread of the communicable disease you selected.
· How do educational and preventative efforts relate to the availability of resources, such as economic resources, personnel, access to healthcare, and means of communication across the globe? Consider the impact of globalization on how information is shared across the world.
· What international health regulatory efforts have been implemented, such as trade monitoring, screening, and quarantines for preventing the spread of the disease?
· Are there preparedness efforts and infrastructure necessary for a country’s ability to prevent the spread of infectious diseases?
Noncommunicable Disease Report: Each team member must also identify one noncommunicable disease from the list your supervisor provided, reporting on the prevalence, impacts, and prevention efforts for that noncommunicable disease. Your team has determined that the following items must be included in each members’ report. Use the questions under each item to guide your assessment of the disease.
· Prevalence: Determine the contributing factors that have led to the increased prevalence across the globe of the noncommunicable disease you selected.
· What lifestyle behaviors, such as diet, physical activity, and substance use, sociodemographic variables such as education, income, and environment, and globalization factors have led to an increased prevalence of the disease?
· Where in the world is the disease most prevalent? Why might these areas be more prone to developing the disease?
· Impacts: Assess the impacts of the noncommunicable disease you selected on public health, economics, and global health security.
· What are the impacts of the disease on the public health of global populations? Consider life expectancy, mortality rate, quality of life, and increased medical costs across the globe.
· What are the impacts on economic growth, productivity, and the workforce across the globe? Consider how the economic impact affects developing countries differently than developed countries.
· How has globalization impacted a country’s health security related to the increased prevalence of the disease?
· Prevention: Discuss the global efforts taken to reduce the prevalence of the noncommunicable disease you selected.
· How do educational and preventative efforts across the globe relate to the availability of resources, such as economic resources, personnel, access to healthcare, and means of communication? Consider the impact of globalization on how information is shared across the world.
· What regulatory efforts are used to reduce the prevalence of the disease? For instance, is there legislation or taxation on certain products to influence the advertising, sale, or use of products?
· Are there preparedness efforts and infrastructure necessary for a country’s ability to prevent the spread of infectious diseases?
What to Submit
1. Communicable Disease Report Select one communicable disease from the list provided. Be sure to explicitly identify the type of disease you selected in your report. Your report should include the following sections: Disease Spread, Impacts, and Prevention. The report should be 500-1,250 words in length and include appropriate citations, including in-text citations and corresponding references.
2. Noncommunicable Disease Report Select one noncommunicable disease from the list provided. Be sure to explicitly identify the type of disease you selected in your report. Your report should include the following sections: Prevalence, Impacts, and Prevention. The report should be 500-1,250 words in length and include appropriate citations, including in-text citations and corresponding references.
