There are different types of quantitative research designs that justify or support themselves in nursing research. Choose one quantitative type design and identify a major advantage and a major disadvantage of this design. Give an example how this quantitative research design could be used in nursing practice to solve a clinical problem (not one noted in your textbook).

Select a qualitative question you are interested in investigating. Discuss the basics of qualitative research: what are the characteristics, what is included, what are the 4 designs of the qualitative type research, which type would be appropriate for your qualitative research question and why? This week, you will submit summaries of quantitative and qualitative studies. The purpose of this assignment is to become familiar with published research, research designs, and methodologies. For the assignment, you will select one  quantitative research study and one qualitative study related to the field of nursing and related to the topic and PICOT questions that you developed in Week 2. Each summary must be accurate, succinct, and clear. The articles must be current (within the last five years).

 

Week 4: Quantitative and Qualitative Summary (Abstract)

Article choice is very important, therefore:

· Articles used for this assignment cannot be used for the other assignments (students should find new research articles for each new assignment).

·  The selected articles should be original research studies. Review articles, concept analysis, meta-analysis, meta-synthesis, integrative review, and systematic review articles should not be used.

· Mixed-methods studies should not be used.

· Dissertations should not be used

Ensure the following questions are addressed in each summary:

1. What type of research is it (quantitative, qualitative, and design)? 2. What was the research question(s) or hypothesis? 3. What is the sample, the sample size, and sample attributes? 4. What was the setting of the study? 5. What were the researcher’s findings? (Identify one.)

 You must submit the research study articles along with your assignment.

· Each summary should be between 150–250 words.

· Use current APA format to style your paper and to cite your sources.

Visit the  Healthy People 2030 website, Topics and Objectives page (Links to an external site.)  (Links to an external site.) and explore some topics of interest to you. Discuss how epidemiologic methods are used to evaluate Healthy People 2020 objectives. Give an example. The example can be one you created or one from an actual study. Include the primary goal/purpose of the descriptive or analytical study, design type in the category chosen, uses of analytic or descriptive type, at least one advantage and disadvantage of the design type.

Consider a patient centered issue you have observed recently. Formulate a research question related to that issue. Identify the independent and dependent variable, hypothesis and type of hypothesis. What type of research study design would you use to address that issue, what type of sampling or sampling strategy would you use? Defend your choices with support from your textbook or other peer-reviewed journal source.

 

Week 6: Literature Search, Rapid Critical Appraisal, and Summary

For this assignment, you will locate  two research studies related to the topic and PICOT questions that you developed in Week 2.  The articles must be current (within the last five years), and one article must be quantitative, and one article must be qualitative. For this assignment all articles must be related to the field of nursing.

· Articles used for this assignment cannot be used for the other assignments. The selected articles should be original research studies. Review articles, concept analysis, meta-analysis, meta-synthesis, integrative review, and systemic review articles should not be used.

· Mixed-methods studies should not be used.

There are two parts to this assignment.

Part 1: Complete a  Rapid Critical Appraisal Checklist  download

· Select one each: qualitative and quantitative research articles.

· Create a Rapid Critical Appraisal Checklist for the two research articles (one column per article).

· Complete with  brief, concise, summarized  information.

Part II: Write a summary (one- to two- pages)

· Identify differences between quantitative and qualitative designs and research methods.

· Use current APA Style for your summary paper and to cite your sources.

· Submit the checklist and summary.

 You must submit the research study articles along with your assignment.

Conducting research with strong ethical principles is a critical component of being an effective nurse researcher. Consider all or some of these questions as you share your reflections on the importance of ethical considerations in nursing research. In the research simulation activity, which character(s) did you play? How did you feel during the simulation experience? What did your character do well? What did your character not do well and what sense can you make of the researcher’s behavior? What else could your character have done? If this situation would occur again how might you handle it? What resources would you use for guidance and support? What did you learn about ethical principles in research?

 

 

Week 10: Summative Assignment: Critique of Research Article

A research critique demonstrates your ability to critically read an investigative study. For this assignment, choose a research article related to nursing.

· Articles used for this assignment cannot be used for the other assignments (students should find new research articles for each new assignment).

· The selected articles should be original research articles. Review articles, concept analysis, meta-analysis, meta-synthesis, integrative review, and systemic review should not be used.

· Mixed-methods studies should not be used.

· Dissertations should not be used.

Your critique should include the following:

Research Problem/Purpose

· State the problem clearly as it is presented in the report.

· Have the investigators placed the study problem within the context of existing knowledge?

· Will the study solve a problem relevant to nursing?

· State the purpose of the research.

Review of the Literature

· Identify the concepts explored in the literature review.

· Were the references current? If not, what do you think the reasons are?

· Was there evidence of reflexivity in the design (qualitative)?

Theoretical Framework

· Are the theoretical concepts defined and related to the research?

· Does the research draw solely on nursing theory or does it draw on theory from other disciplines?

· Is a theoretical framework stated in this research piece?

· If not, suggest one that might be suitable for the study.

Variables/Hypotheses/Questions/Assumptions (Quantitative)

· What are the independent and dependent variables in this study?

· Are the operational definitions of the variables given? If so, are they concrete and measurable?

· Is the research question or the hypothesis stated? What is it?

Conceptual Underpinnings, Research Questions (Qualitative)

· Are key concepts defined conceptually?

· Is the philoosoophical basis, underlying tradition, conoceptual framework, or ideological orientation made explicit and is it appropriate for the problem?

· Are research questions explicitly stated? Are the questions consistent with the study’s philosophical basis, underlying tradition, conceptual framework, or ideological orientation?

Methodology

· What type of design (quantitative, qualitative, and type) was used in this study?

· Was inductive or deductive reasoning used in this study?

· State the sample size and study population, sampling method, and study setting.

· Did the investigator choose a probability or non-probability sample?

· State the type of reliability and the validity of the measurement tools (quantitative only)

Qualitative studies (answer the following questions in addition to those above except the last bulleted item)

· Were the methods of gathering data appropriate?

· Were data gathered through two or more methods to achieve triangulation?

· Did the researcher ask the right questions or make the right observations and were they recorded in an appropriate fashion?

· Was a sufficient amount of data gathered?

· Was the data of sufficient depth and richness?

Were ethical considerations addressed? Were appropriate procedures used to safeguard the rights of study participants?

Data Analysis

· What data analysis tool was used?

· Was saturation achieved? (qualitative)

· How were the results presented in the study?

· Were the data management (e.g., coding) and data analysis methods sufficiently described? (qualitative)

· Identify at least one (1) finding.

Summary/Conclusions, Implications, and Recommendations

· Do the themes adequately capture the meaning of the data?

· Did the analysis yield an insightful, provocative and meaningful picture of the phenomenon under investigation?

· Were methods used to enhance the trustworthiness of the data (and analysis) and was the description of those methods adequate?

· Are there clear explanation of the boundaries/limitations, thick description, audit trail?

· What are the strengths and limitations of the study?

· In terms of the findings, can the researcher generalize to other populations? Explain.

· Evaluate the findings and conclusions as to their significance for nursing (both qualitative and quantitative).

The body of your paper should be 4–6 double-spaced pages plus a cover page and a reference page. The critique must be attached to the article and follow APA guidelines.
